As a cub, Milagros survived alone from an airplane crash near San Jerónimo in Chachapoyas (Peru) in 2003. She was saved and taken to the Rescue Center for Andean Bears in Chaparrí where she stood out for her intelligence, creating 23 escape plans, until she succeeded in 2009, and went back to wildlife. Only a few months later, she was photographed with 2 cubs and since then had many others, reproducing for four generations. She maintained relationship with the Chaparrí's rangers who became her family and from time to time she would show up with her cubs. In 2024, she was expected to be still alive and could be recognized by her unique L-shaped while spot over her left eyebrow.
Hernán Garrido Lecca, who wrote the successful children book “Milagros, an Extraordinary Bear” told her story in connection with the famous Paddington Bear. In 2023, the director Eduardo Schuldt directed the award-winning animated movie. The movie has been certified as the world’s first climate-positive animated film, contributing to decarbonization of the film industry.
