The great hero of the Genpei War (1185) was Minamoto Yoshitsune, half-brother of the chieftain Yoritomo, who, jealous of his victories, unjustly accused him of high treason. Yoshitsune, the epic hero of the Tale of the Heike, is depicted dressed as a general, complete with armor, helmet, sword, arrows, and a staff of command. On his chest, he wears the heraldic banner of the Minamoto clan: three gentian flowers on bamboo leaves.
