Minerva o Pallade di Velletri (Copia di)

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna
Bologna, Italy

Plaster cast from a Roman marble copy of a bronze original by Cresila from the second half of the 5th century BC, preserved in the Louvre Museum. The cast of Bologna, already in the Accademia in 1811, may have been cast before the statue left for Paris (September 1802), and arrive on the occasion of the establishment of the Royal Academy. The copy could also have been taken from the form made in Paris by the original, from which also the calder of Brera derives, complete however with the right arm of restoration. The absence of the arm is not sufficient to opt, in the absence of more precise documents, for one of the two hypotheses. In the inventory of 1803 a head of Pallas is also remembered.
