Carlisle & Finch’s electric locomotive draws inspiration from the small engines used to move coal cars in narrow mine shafts. Credited with introducing the electric toy train in 1896, the Ohio-based firm stumbled into toy making in an effort to market their patented electric motors. This style of mining locomotive, complete with three coal cars, was added to Carlisle & Finch’s line of trains and streetcars in 1898.
