King Leopold paid a formal visit to Doel on the 9th of May 1833 and was met by a delegation of notable villagers, including the mayor Lodewijk Goossens and the pastor Constantinus De Backer. Because of their heroic resistance, the inhabitants of Doel were solemnly promised that they would not fall victim to the floods caused by the recent military operations. The head of state Leopold spoke on this occasion the reassuring words: "Vous ne serez pas inondée, Messieurs"
