Miss Jane Wallis (1774-1848) was a well-known child actor. The granddaughter of Samuel Butler's first wife, Tryphosa Brockell, Miss Wallis performed at Richmond Theatre on several occasions. In this portrait by the artist Samuel De Wilde, she is shown dressed as Palmira from Voltaire's tragedy 'Mahomet the Prophet'. The print was engraved by Leney of London and published by John Bell in 1795.
