Mission at Sunrise

Sauerwein first visited the West in 1891 seeking relief from tuberculosis. After an initial visit to Taos in 1899, Sauerwein bought a Taos adobe in 1906, today part of the historic Taos Inn. He lived at Taos from November 1907 to November 1908 and had he not died in 1910, Sauerwein may have become the seventh founder of the Taos Society of Artists. James D. Hamlin Collection.
