The son of a navy captain, John Breck enjoyed an international training, studying in Germany and Paris. Eventually settling in the small French town of Giverny, Breck became close friends with famed French impressionist Claude Monet, who lived, worked, and painted his famous water lilies there. This work shows a scene from Venice, a popular spot for other American painters such as Thomas Moran and John Singer Sargent.
