Mithraic Relief

Baths of Diocletian

Baths of Diocletian
Roma, Italy

The relief depicts the central episode of the myth of the god Mithras: the raven has just flyed on Mithras' cape and the god is holding the bull by the nostrils and stabbing it with a knife. The snake jumps up to lick the blood from the wound, while the dog is approaching and the scorpion grabs the bull's testicles. On either side of the scene are the "torch-bearers", Cautes (torch pointing up) and Cautopates (torch pointing down) together with the sun, Sol, in top left, and Luna in top right. The remains of the original coloring are evident in the relief. End of the 3rd century AD
