This print is part of Yoshitoshi's famous series "100 Aspects of the Moon" which depicts scenes from traditional Chinese and Japanese history and lore. The courtier Fujiwara no Moronaga (1137-1192) was briefly banished to Shikoku Island following the Hogen Rebellion in 1156. He consoled his homesickeness by playing the biwa on Mount Miyaji, where a water goddess, or suijin, appeared to hear him play.
