During its peak production half of the one hundred households in Miyama were involved in the making of washi paper. Although papermaking by hand was passed down as family business during the winter season by entire villages of farming households in Miyama, domestic papermaking ceased in most households by the forties of the Shōwa period (1965-1974). Many traditional industries also began to fall into decline nationwide during this period. Miyama was once handmade at every household, but is now only handmade at the Miyama Washi Promotion and Research Center.
