About the artist: Herbert H. Laidman (1stLt, USMCR) (1914 – 1987)
Hugh Laidman graduated from the Pratt Institute in 1937 and worked as an art director and freelance illustrator. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on 2 July 1942 and was the first artist selected for the Combat Art Program. Laidman served with the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing on Guadalcanal in 1943. In 1944, he served at Marine Barracks Washington in the Division of Public Relations. After World War II, Laidman led a successful career as a freelance artist. He was commissioned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to illustrate the history of the first astronaut training program. Laidman died in 1987.
