MOBILE RAM BOATS

National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo Da Vinci

Milan, Italy

These two boats recall roman vessels with rams used to hook enemy ships for close distance battling. The large scorpion-tale shaped scythe is very dangerous. Thanks to a rotating base, it can be easily aimed at a target. The mechanism lifting the scythe is operated by a crank and gears. The rowers are protected by tall shields called mantelets and by animal skins that shelter them from the enemy fire falling from above.
