Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince" was first released in New York on April 6, 1943. The novella tells the story of an unnamed traveler who crash-landed in the middle of the Sahara Desert. The traveler encountered a young prince. The pair spent eight days together and the prince told the traveler about his own adventure. The prince had lived alone with a single rose on an asteroid. The rose tormented the prince, so he left the asteroid. On his intergalactic travels, the prince met a fox, a snake, a king, a vain man, a drunkard, a businessman, a lamplighter, a geographer, an astronomer, and a salesclerk, among others. The prince dealt with emotions of conflict—isolation, fear, and uncertainty—and his confusion over adult matters. The men he grappled with have been reduced to their occupations. At the end of the story the prince returned to his planet and rejoined his rose. Written in wartime New York City, Saint-Exupéry's continues to teach us life-lessons. Scholars are not only fascinated by the tale, but also by the author himself. Children and adults connect to the prince’s curiosities and ability to love. As “New Yorker” staff writer Adam Gopnik noted “the book moves from asteroid to desert, from fable and comedy to enigmatic tragedy, in order to make on recurrent point: You can’t love roses. You can only love a rose.”
