In 1907, the native police force was restructured and renamed the Civil Guard of the Spanish Territories of the Gulf of Guinea (Guardia Civil de los Territorios Españoles del Golfo de Guinea), later becoming the Colonial Guard (Guardia Colonial) in 1908. It operated under the Ministry of State, and the colony’s Governor General was the Inspector General. In 1932, a large number of the corps’ officers were replaced by Army personnel. In 1959, its name changed again, becoming the Territorial Guard of the Province of Guinea (Guardia Territorial de la Provincia de Guinea). A Mobile Unit of the Civil Guard was created in Bata, and another in Santa Isabel. These remained until Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968.
