The great French master Valentin de Boulogne was one of the most talented followers of Caravaggio, from whose style he attained the extraordinary naturalism matched by high composition skills. The artist arrived in Rome after Caravaggio's death and shortly thereafter painted the scene of the mocked Christ crowned with thorns, now in an English private collection. This famous work is known to have been replicated around 1620 by his workshop, and the version hosted by Ricci's collection is most probably this replica.
