Model Egyptian Steam Locomotive

Working model and accessories of a tank locomotive engine, for use in Egypt, 1862, (scale 1:8); screw jack, four flags, set of fire bars, shovel, 3 firing irons, rail gauge and 3 lamps. Model represents a tank engine built in 1862 at Alexandria, by Jeffrey Bey, for working the train service between Alexandria and Suez.

Models were used to sell the latest ideas in engineering around the world. With English on one side and Arabic on the other, this model was a sales tool to persuade Egyptian railway companies to buy British exports. The full-size locomotive ran a service between Alexandria and Suez.

The various accessories of a locomotive are also represented in this model, including a traversing screw jack, the stoking and firing irons, fire bars, and lanterns. The engine is provided with a hand brake which acts on the driving wheels, and a light cab is fitted over the footplate to give shelter from the intense heat of the Egyptian sun.
