No. 1 Poultry was commissioned by Peter Palumbo in 1985, but not built until 1998, six years after Stirling's death. There were two main designs: one, Scheme A which retained the Mappin & Webb building at the apex of the site, with the new development behind (including a 150 ft tower). There were also two versions of this scheme, the earlier one included a colonnade that gave access to a central space, which was replaced in the later version by a wide, arched entrance. The second main design, Scheme B did not retain the Mappin & Webb building, but occupied the entire site, although it was lower. It was this design which became the final scheme in 1987.
