This sculpture done in high-relief commemorates the people's rebellion of 1808 in Madrid, a futile attempt from Spanish citizens to remove the French troops occupying the city. The relief is thought to be a study for a sculpture that is now in the Jardines del General Fanjul, which displays a similar composition complete with an angel hovering over the corpses of various soldiers and civilians. In his initial design for the sculpture now in Madrid, Marinas García included sketches for several reliefs meant to decorate the figure's pedestal. The Ponce relief could be a model for an earlier format of the sculpture that was later modified.
