The hobby model building has a long history and many devoted practitioners. Most model makers pick a subject that interests them or that reflects part of their pasts, and they build replicas of the boats, vehicles, airplanes, or buildings that intrigue them. The enjoyment is less about completing the model and displaying it on a shelf than it is about the process of creating it. Many modelers talk about their enjoyment in perfecting new skills and improving their mastery of tools and techniques. They find pleasure in faithfully replicating the helicopter they flew in the army or the cargo truck that transported supplies and materiel to forward bases. This model of the M 926 Cargo Truck was made from scratch: the model maker did not use a kit. Rather he cut pieces freehand and figured out the best ways to assemble and finish them.
