Model of a Low German Hall House

16th century

Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg

Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg
Nuremberg, Germany

The remarkable surviving living/kitchen area of a Low German hall house would have been the centre of communal life in the 16th to 18th century. The room is characteristic of rural abodes in which large husbandry areas were combined with modest living quarters in which humans and animals lived together. The reconstructed living/kitchen area provides us with a unique insight into the hub of early-modern everyday life in the countryside.
