During excavations carried out in Tostedt by the Archaeological Museum of Hamburg, the outlines of two wooden predecessors of the present church were discovered. Both wooden churches date back to the early days of Christianity in Northern Germany in the 9th and 10th centuries. The church floor plans of Tostedt are considered extremely important archaeological discoveries. The detection of early church buildings is very difficult by nature, because they usually are built over by modern churches. To date, none of the churches founded by Ansgar could be localized.
