In 1912 the Antwerp-based enterprise B.M. Spiers imported the very first bananas to Antwerp. They were transported using refrigerated steam boats from Central america.

In 1924 the Antwerp companies Gerard Koninckx Frères (GKF) and Léon Van Parys (LVP) began importing bananas. Initially they were transported from plantations in Belgian Congo, using ships from the shipping company Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB).
