Model of the Victoria on a scale of 1:24. The Victoria was the first ship to circumnavigate the world. On its voyage to the Maluku (formerly the Moluccas or Spice) Islands, it was able to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, sailing for the first time along the Strait of Magellan. Captained by Juan Sebastián de Elcano, the ship crossed the Indian Ocean and skirted Africa, rounding the Cape of Good Hope. It returned to Seville with 18 survivors on board, having traveled 46,270 nautical miles (53,252 miles or 85,700 km) over 1,084 days.
