Washington, DC, United States

The Space Shuttle was the essential complement to a space station. It delivered large modules, trusses, solar arrays and other components to the orbital construction site, and it transported the astronaut crews tasked with assembling the space station. Once the station was built and occupied, the Shuttle ferried crews, supplies, and equipment to keep the orbital outpost in operation. When docked together, the Shuttle-space station complex was easily visible as it crossed the sky. The Shuttle lived up to its reputation as a "workhorse" by carrying out many missions to the International Space Station. McDonnell Douglas gave this Shuttle model, with a space station model, to the Museum in 1988.
