Model Steam Locomotive, Sans Pareil

Model steam locomotive, identified as Sans Pareil, early 19th century, and originally attributed to Timothy Hackworth.

Made by a clockmaker to put engineer William Hedley’s experimental ideas to the test, this is the first twin-cylinder steam locomotive. Two cylinders doubled its power and balanced the motion of the locomotive, stopping it swaying from side to side.

This model has multiple cylinders and is a prototype for all the fossil-fuel powered transport that followed. It might have been built by either of the famous early locomotive pioneers Timothy Hackworth or Richard Trevithick, but maybe even by clockmaker William West, who is known to have built models for Trevithick.
