Modern Boxwood Carving with Swimming Geese by Wang Duchun

Arts & Crafts Museum Hangzhou

Arts & Crafts Museum Hangzhou
Hangzhou, China

This piece of boxwood carving by Wang Duchun, a male Chinese arts and crafts master born in 1932 in Yueqing, Zhejiang province, illustrates a life-like scene of eight geese, swimming and playing with each other on glittering waters among the reeds. They are in various postures, either crying out, or chasing fish, or fluttering wings, or jumping into the water. Having grasped the inspiration that cropped up in daily life, the artisan was able to express the sentiment of the times via the traditional folk art form based on the combination of his aesthetic taste and a real-life scene.
