Heritage gardens continue to be part of the landscape of North St. Mary’s Island. The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society helps maintain the flower gardens, as they have done since the early days of the canal.
The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society and the Sault Ste. Marie Canal have a long history together. Superintendent J.W. LeBreton Ross (acting 1907-1936) was a passionate gardener, and the first President of Sault Ste. Marie’s Horticultural Society.
In this photo, a Horticultural Society member is tending to one of the heritage flower beds. She is in the background while the focus is on the yellow lilies, pink cosmos, black-eyed susans, ornamental kale and other plants in the garden.
