Arts & Crafts Museum Hangzhou

Arts & Crafts Museum Hangzhou
Hangzhou, China

This piece of stone carving by Lin Jinxing, a male arts and crafts master of Zhejiang province born in Wenzhou in 1941 applied Lotus Red Stone, a variety of Shoushan stones, coupled with a root-sculpture base. This pleasantly-shaped piece with rich colors presents a life-like scene of goldfish swimming around lotus flowers, conveying the traditional theme of “abundant life year after year” based on the “fish” and “surplus” homonym in the Chinese language. The goldfish in various postures, jumping up from the water or playing with each other, gives testimony to the artisan’s ingenious carving skills, especially the openwork carving techniques.
