The production of oil-paper umbrellas in Yangkou town, Nanping city in China’s southeastern Fujian province involves dozens of procedures, including but not limited to making ribs out of grown bamboo from Shunchang, tung oil out of high quality tung trees in Renshou, Yangdun, persimmon syrup from wild persimmons in Jiaoxi and canopy out of cotton cloth from Youxi. The Yangkou oil-paper umbrellas won the “Hundred Flowers Award” of arts and crafts in Fujian province in the 1980s.
