Cotton printed long skirt and matching top
1960s
Singapore
By “Mohans of Singapore”
This summer ensemble is made of lightweight plain weave printed cotton. The shirt is worn with a matching sarong style skirt. The machine printed batik-style motif is traditional Indonesian as are the frog closures. Frog closures are traditional on both men and women’s clothing. The skirt is cut in a sarong style with pleats at the front near the hem. There are hook closures on the skirt waistband.
This cotton ensemble was bought in Singapore in the early 60s and brought back and worn in Australia. Most likely it was made with the foreign tourist in mind and sold through hotel shops like Raffles.
