A Look into the 138 Ranches of the Country
Compiled in 1678 by Heo Mok, who was the head of Saboksi, Mokjangjido (Maps of Ranches) is a 43-page atlas comprising one volume of painted manuscript maps showing ranches throughout the country under the late Joseon Dynasty. Mokjangjido presents not only information about the national distribution of horse ranches, but also provides pictorial and statistical information. Saboksi was an institution affiliated with the defense ministry and located in Sujin-bang (one of the eight administrative districts of the Joseon Dynasty; current address: 146, Susong-dong, central Seoul) in the capital Hanseong-bu, managing affairs concerning horses, ranches, and the royal palanquin.
