Theatre performance Molière by Luk Parceval, programmed in Holland Festival 2008.
What Luk Perceval first extracted from Shakespeare in his Ten Oorlog! (1998), this Belgian director currently working as Schaubühne’s resident director in Germany now achieves with molière. Together with the German writers’ duo of Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel he tears Molière’s plays apart and mixes them with biographical fragments from the life of Molière, the central theatrical personality of the 17th century. Actor Thomas Thieme, previously Richard III in Schlachten!, the German version of Ten Oorlog!, plays Molière in his most famous characters, including the scolding misanthrope Alceste, the cynical and amoral seducer Don Juan and the great saviour Tartuffe. In the heart of a raging and blinding snowstorm we behold a shockingly dark portrait of a human being wrestling with his fervent desires.
