Monochrome photo of museum guests on second floor

La Casa del Libro

La Casa del Libro
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Architect Frederick C. Gjessing and Elmer Adler, the museum's founder and first executive director, transformed 225 Cristo St. from a multi-family Spanish colonial house to a small museum, becoming the first restored house on the islet, and one of the first museums to open in this street. Balconies, and semi-circular transoms above doorways, are characteristic of this architectural style.
