According to family tradition, James Monroe used this mahogany Louis XVI-style desk to write his annual message to Congress in 1823 that included the foreign policy statement later termed the Monroe Doctrine. Monroe bought the desk and associated furniture pieces while serving as Minister to France in the 1790s
