MONTICELLO
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA, BUILT 1769–1826
ARCHITECT: THOMAS JEFFERSON

He rejected the Georgian-inspired house style of his Tidewater neighbors, instead drawing inspiration from the work of the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Jefferson incorporated the temple-fronted portico, the five-part house plan that allowed service functions, and some slave quarters within the building.
