Mont Royal is Montreal’s famous natural landmark and, as the city developed, Notre-Dame Basilica became its most noted architectural feature. The church was finished by 1829, save for the towers which were completed by 1843. St. Helen’s Island provided a pastoral escape and counterpoint to the bustle of a growing city.
