Moon White Valance Embroidered with Flower and Peacock

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

A pair of male and female peacocks is the motif of this embroidery. In ancient times, peacocks were regarded as "literary animals," which were not only praised for their glaring feathers but also their virtues. They have been viewed as the symbol of auspiciousness. A couple of peacocks also suggest a happy and prosperous marriage. Flowers, bamboos, birds and butterflies with auspicious significations are sewed around the peacocks. The valance is bordered with European ornament.
