This moonfish comes from the "Pesciara" fossil association, the most famous deposit of Bolca. Consisting mostly of fish and plant remains, with more than 250 species known, the Pesciara takes its name from the wealth of fossil fish fauna (“pesce” in Italian); in fact, it encompasses both cartilaginous, particularly sharks, and bony fishes, with a faunal association typical of tropical marine environments, which displays strong affinities with those of today’s Indo-Pacific warm seas.
