This object is formed of a glass and metal frame housing a cylindrical burner with a tube at its end. This is connected to an oil chamber which would have fueled the light. The lantern consists of a Fresnel lens which is protected by a frame made of 5 strong bronze arcs. These are arranged vertically, and are screwed into the lantern’s base and cover. The upper part is convex in shape with a chimney or ventilation shaft. At the very top is a part shaped like a hemispherical hood. The entire surface of the chimney is covered in small perforations which allow the air to escape and prevent the light from being extinguished. The object was made by the German lantern manufacturer C.H. Stobwasser & Co. in Berlin in around 1860.
