Mosaic featuring horses

4th century AD

National Museum of Archaeology

National Museum of Archaeology
Lisboa, Portugal

This mosaic was hung in one of the most important rooms of the Torre de Palma Villa, excavated between 1947 and 1956. It is believed the villa dates to the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century. The mosaic features five horses and has a swastika background and rope patterns, similar patterns have been found in Eressos (Greece),and Antioquia e Awza'i (Lebanon). A mosaic featuring the same five horses has also appeared in the 10th house of Bulla Regia. The close relationship between these two mosaics suggests that this piece was created by African artisans.
