The artist was the son of the famous writer and playwright Luigi Pirandello. He used a biblical theme in this maternity scene where he hints at the normality of daily life with the strong, dramatic existential character that marked his production during the 1930s. The protagonists of the painting are his wife Pompilia and his son Pierluigi, depicted in his rough and painful painting, the result of a troubled exploration of reality, bodies and objects.
