Together with its pendant, The Judgement of Solomon, this painting arrived in the Uffizi in 1795 from the Medicen Villa of Poggio Imperiale and was attributed to Giovanni Bellini. Doubt still surrounds the attribution due to the figures in the foreground. It is likely that the patron was Bartolomeo Campagnola, prelate of Santa Maria del Carmine, in Padua at that time.
