Scholars believe this to be a portrait of Queen Nana, the wife of King Metang, who ruled the Kingdom of Batufam from 1912 to 1924. Mbeudjang, an artist from the neighbouring Kingdom of Bangwa Oriental, carved this maternity figure. It once formed part of a set of male and female figures made in honour of the new king. They stood under the roof of the verandah of the palace residence during ancestral rituals and large state festivals.
