The composition Moulin Rouge was painted during Vytautas Kasiulis’ later period of work. This stage is typified by a strong sense of compositional eclecticism, smaller forms, complicated stylization and a greater number of characters. The noisy cabaret shenanigans echoed by the expressive group of dancers, painted in the foreground, seem to draw the viewer in, like the enormous wings of the “Red Mill” (Moulin Rouge).
