This belt mount is decorated with niello. Niello is an alloy of silver and – in this case − iron. Lines were scratched into the silver, which were then inlaid with iron or copper thread. After that the surface was melted and polished, to attach the niello securely. This process resulted in a smooth object with a pattern in silver and black.
