Mountain after a Shower

横山大観1940

This is one of the pieces painted in commemoration of the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of Japan and 50th year of Taikan’s painting career. The peaks of the mountain range which appear out of a cloudy fog spread across the whole space, and their lines are bared. The fog, rising up along the mountains from the bottom forms the clouds, and they spread throughout the sky. This scene provides a quiet yet dynamic feeling. Meanwhile, Mt. Fuji, standing as if looking down on the beautiful scene is fixed and stout, displaying its powerful existence. “Mountain after a shower” captures a scene becoming clear and sunny after the rain, which is well-suited for the 2,600th year celebrations, and ushers a feeling of the dawn of a new Japan. This is considered to be one of the top five works of Taikan’s many sumi-ink paintings.
