Daingerfield painted this dramatic view of a passing storm at his summer home in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Like his teacher, George Inness, Daingerfield aimed to evoke the spiritual qualities of nature through the use of rich colors, scratchy brushwork and the suggestive treatment of light. Here, an intense sunbeam breaks through the clouds in the center of the composition to illuminate the tiny white church on the horizon.
