Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian composer, artist, choir leader and cultural figure. The prevailing art streams of the turn of the 19th–20th centuries are combined in his art works – symbolism, romanticism, seccession, as well as the beginnings of abstractionism, the newest direction in art. The painting Mountains comes from Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ early creative period. It depicts an other-wordly realm where the sacrality and spirituality of nature is implied, as well as the mysterious and harmonious bonds between its elements. The composition reflects the cosmic, religious and philosophical themes that interested M. K. Čiurlionis, that were also revealed in the artist’s later works via complicated and often puzzling symbols.
