Helen Smith Hoover, wife of Vice Adm. John Howard Hoover, christened USS Intrepid (CV-11) on April 26, 1943. In this photograph, Hoover (right) poses with Berline F. Cashwell, one of the women who worked as a riveter at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, where Intrepid was constructed. Hoover holds a gift she received from the shipyard, while Cashwell holds the gloves that she wore at work.
